Reunion Newsletter [6.26.26]
Did you feel energized this week? Depressed? Clarity? Did you do anything different? Talk to people different? Did you keep high fiving in the streets? Keep talking about the Knicks or did the moment fade without gatherings?
I’ve read people talk about their personal response to the moment of winning, and I relate. It was more internalized. I did too. People at my house jumped up and down, but I knelt and kinda cradled my head. Watched and listened. Took it in. My big epiphany was during game 1, I forget which shot it was, I think it was Landry Shamet, the one that was like oh my gd we’re actually going to win…and oh my gd if we win this game…we’re actually…probably…maaaaybe…going to win it all. I cried at the MSG watch party in that moment. And then felt the euphoria walking outside into the huge crowd. That was my oh my gd we’re going to win the championship finally moment. Then game 4 was the literal jumping and screaming OH MY GD WTF IS THIS WHAT IS HAPPENING HOW IS THIS HAPPENIGN OH MY GD WHATTTTTTTTAATTTTTTTT. By the time game 5 came around I was fully prepared. I was not in the, let’s bring it back to win at MSG in 6 crowd. I wanted to win, I did not want to tempt fate, I'd learned 30 years of lessons on this team. And also, I was ready. It was indicative of my reaction to the actual victory. I just wanted to take it all in. I’d had my emotional arc already, the actual moment was more about taking stock. Listening in my head to my grandparents. To the ghosts of New York City. To the surreality of being able to watch an NBA Finals game in 2026 with my father to my left and literal Bill Bradley to my right. I had a bunch of friends over for game 5, and then we went down to MSG area to celebrate after. I ran into my section’s security guard. In the sea of I don’t know, they said, like an actual million people. He was propped up on one of those street garden pot things on 33rd and 6th, closest you could go to MSG, so it made sense. And I spent about a half hour just hanging out with him, freaking out, trading stories between our friends. Saying over and over again in different ways how we cannot believe this and are so grateful we get to experience this etc etc. We watched kids smash cars a half block away, I have video of all that, with the fire extinguishes going off, that whole scene that people got mad about. There were lots of people acting out. I saw one maybe two arrests. They were pretty mellow. Everything was so nice and connected. Again, I return to that idea that this was for everyone (*except the people that certain person who had nothing to do with any of this cited during his 9 minute parade speech, while all the people who actually did the thing spoke for 90 seconds. It’s for the fans, the org, and most importantly the players who did it. It’s not for the random Knicks who barely made a dent on the franchise and are only best used by poseurs to fake fandom like he did. I hate him). I at no point had the urge to stake a claim as having been there earlier or more than anyone else, none of that mattered to me. I was and continue to be excited that so many people care about this, anywhere from .01% to 100%. It makes me feel connected to people more, bowing in understanding of how we all experience the world, how we live our lives. Same goes for movies. I watch a movie and have my reaction. I don’t seek out the mirror reaction in others around me. I love to listen and receive their points of view. The kids have variations of that phrase last night was a movie, and it embodies this moment. These are peak emotional experiences. Everyone has their own, and everyone derives their own meaning. That’s the stuff life’s made of. What did it mean to you? What did it make you feel? How did you change? What did you see in others? What are you going to do next? That’s how I go to movies. I love walking out of movies and watching other people’s reactions. Hearing what they think. I keep talking about that couple next to me during Obsession, who had a total meltdown. They were ok, so I don’t mind reveling in their frenetic experience. I loved seeing it. This movie did so much to them. And I got to have this voyeuristic front row seat to their pathos. Knicks run was a front row seat to the entire city’s pathos. We got to see how soooo many people respond to sooo much evocative stimulus. It’s so cool. So that’s how I kinda went into this week. I was done getting every single nugget of info. It’s crazy the amount of ‘content’ the thing generated. Knicks on every brand deal and talk and pod and whatever possible. Which is awesome. I want them to. Go get money and everything. Deserved. But that’s not for us. What’s for us now is to listen to each other. I've loved seeing how the moment impacted everyone in all their unique ways. It’s a once in a lifetime occurrence and I’m so grateful I’ve gotten to take it in so much.
Happy pseudo 2666 day.

We think every individual newsletter charging magazine subscription prices for one column is absurd, unfair, and unrealistic; end of world kinda stuff. So we make this free. But it’s a lot of work. If you have it, please donate. If you dig, share and all that stuff. Thx.
