I met Calvin Lee Reeder years ago at what became a formative SXSW Midnight Shorts program. I talk about it as a kinda template for what I try to do with Reunion. It was special to me first because the films were excellent—including Calvin’s The Rambler (see below), still one of my favorite shorts of all time. Then the filmmakers present were a who’s who of that moment. Calvin, Joe Swanberg, Kent Osborne, Jack Ferry, Greta Gerwig, Lynn Shelton, and lots more. I tried to look up the lineup but the link appears dead. 2008. And we all hung out after at the bar next door, and I got to pick everyone’s brain. That’s what I try to make Reunion. I’ve been lucky to keep in touch with Calvin, who went on to premiere The Oregonian at Sundance a few years later, which we talk a lot about, and then The Rambler feature with Dermot Mulroney taking his place. His latest, The A-Frame, premiered at Tribeca and opens today at Film Noir Brooklyn and Lumiere Santa Monica. Listen to our chat here.
