Reunion event this week was awesome! Thanks everyone for coming.
Big day at the movies about to happen. 4:15pm I go to Times Square for original Jan de Bont Twister on 4DX. Then 7:15pm, I head down to Tribeca for My First Film’s opening night at Roxy Cinema with the whole band.
I’ve said it many times, act one of og Twister is perfect. I can watch it over and over again. And the rest of the movie works and allows itself to go full Walter Murch emotion rules because it’s so well set up, and the key elements—love story we care about and TORNADOES + a crazy cast—work so well. I cannot wait. I hope my popcorn flies. Love that they are doing this.
My First Film from Zia Anger and co is a big deal. I hope y’all realize this. It’s sold out tonight, but it should be sold out across the board and held over and in many theaters w many q+a’s and stuff. Last night we debuted the making-of documentary at Reunion. It’s a making of a making of a making of a making of. It’s the meta-ist thing ever. It’s amazing. Every filmmaker and artist and feeling person should see it. To watch with Zia and her alter ego Odessa in person is a once in a lifetime experience. I’m not a FOMO type, but I would not miss this for the world. I’m so so so thankful I saw Zia’s original live performance back in the day. It’s a beautiful beautiful thing that Zia and Memory / Riel have brought this journey to fruition in every way possible, with a beautiful film that will stream soon on MUBI as well. But please, I implore you, see this with an audience. It’s the whole point of it. The whole point of making movies. Zia explains it in the movie. I’m not even going to quote her. Just go. Hear her for yourself. She’s very special.
MUBI, all love, sincerely, but stop promoting The Substance and please promote My First Film some more. You have an all time classic on your hands. The Substance is a dumb attention grabber. Get serious.
Reunion this week was awesome. I talked about how a place like Salmagundi and filmmakers like this week’s are why I’ll never leave New York City, despite the rats the heat the noise the impossible movements the impossible prices etc. It’s the best. We wouldn’t get that anywhere else. It was one of those nights that truly felt like an honor to be able to present. Like that I got to take the mic at the 150 year old club and introduce the set of talent we had last night, it was really a pleasure. I love all of those people and it was an audience full of love too. Everything got huge reactions. I love a packed room like that, everyone bounces off each other. That’s the way I like to see movies, packed together, connected. I talked about how stadium seating with smelly chicken fingers isn’t my bag. Cram us in, rows, crane our necks, if one person in the theater is sick, pump that contagion into my veins. Let’s go. We’re in this together. Movies baby. I love it.
I made that whole speech and someone after basically interviewed me about my moviegoing habits and preferences. It was funny. I’m exclusively a popcorn guy. I used to relate my never having done drugs to never having had sour patch kids at the movies. I am good with popcorn. I love that experience. Why add to it when I’m not longing for more? I’m fully satisfied with the popcorn on lap bright wall dark room experience, to the point that I crave and fantasize over it all week when I’m not at the movies. I’ve never needed more. Alamo Drafthouse was a cool thing to go to once a year at SXSW, but I never wanted it back at home. I don’t want recliners. I don’t want food. I don’t even want Buncha Crunch or Icees. I just want popcorn. And movies. And people. I want the people as close to me as possible. I’d rather have my view blocked by a tall person in front of me than not. And let people make all the noise they want with their popcorn chewing. I love it. But if they crinkle wrappers I’ll fucking kill em.
