Reunion Newsletter [7.3.26]
My birthday is August 1st. Going to throw party that’ll double as new issue launch for Magazine Non Grata. Will put details out in a few days. But it’ll be downtown Manhattan like 10pm-ish Saturday night. And obviously Benihana for dinner, the only respectable place for birthdays.
Studios did a great job on kids movies. There are lots of options right now. Toy Story, Minions and Moana. With a few other movies that are basically for children in their own way like Super Girl and Disclosure Day. Not a lot out there for fully formed brains. We’ve got a re-release of Backrooms with more footage, which is kinda annoying because I want to see it but I don’t want to sit through the movie again. I’ll go toward end and just watch the post-credits additional footage. WTF is Young Washington??? I haven’t been able to get to Jackass but am very sad this wasn’t a smash hit. I love them and heard this one is excellent—in whatever way they can be measured for quality. I think the Olivia Wilde comes out this weekend, that’s for adults, that’s the only new adult release I think. I had an excellent Zoey Deutch double feature the other day with Voicemails for Isabelle on The Netflix and then David Wain’s Gail Daughtry Celebrity Sex Pass. I loved them both. I cackled laughing at Gail. So much fun. Please go see it. I also realized there are more episodes of The Studio that I never watched. I thought the Golden Globes episode was the season finale and I just never finished it. So I have that. And the Larry David thing, but I dunno. First episode felt kinda tedious. Like the same joke alternating contexts. In general though, old movies continue to be the marquee draws. Incredible stuff playing right now in New York if you live here. Feels like I have something every day on my calendar that feels like a special event. It’s becoming a tired refrain from me that repertory cinema is just spectacular.
Really excited for the Isabel Sandoval retrospective AND new release Moonglow at Asia Society NYC! Linked below. 🍿🍿🍿
The Empire State Russians not being branded content, and The Odyssey not doing influencer screenings is a turning of the tide. Cool stuff.
I believe there is more to the Celtics dumping Jaylen Brown for less than nothing, considering they’re, until we learn more, stuck with Paul George for two years. If there is nothing more to it, then it’s the second worst trade I can think of after Luka. I want the Knicks to sign and old big, trade for a young big, and add LeBron. I can’t believe the world has turned so many times that we finally see a time when I actually think it would be fun to have LeBron on the Knicks. I think it’d be awesome. Peak NBA drama. I admit it. I want it.
Stay cool people, it’s ugly out there this weekend. Don’t die.

We think every individual newsletter charging magazine subscription prices for one column is absurd, unfair, and unrealistic; end of world kinda stuff. So we make this free. But it’s a lot of work. If you have it, please donate. If you dig, share and all that stuff. Thx.
